How the stickers are made, and how to make them last

From a scene in a sketchbook to glossy kiss-cut vinyl on your laptop, plus the unglamorous application and care advice that keeps a sticker looking new.

Every sticker in this shop goes through the same short life before it reaches you. Here is what happens, and what you can do to keep it looking the way it did out of the envelope.

1. It starts as a scene

Not a logo, not a character standing in a void. A moment: two people asleep in a library, a snowball melting before it lands, an argument conducted nose to nose. The test is simple: would someone in that fandom recognise it without a caption, and would they want to look at it every day on a laptop lid?

2. It gets drawn and cut to shape

Each design is drawn for this shop. Nothing is traced, reposted or bought as a stock pack. Once the art is done it gets a die line, the path the blade will follow, with a white border around the design. That border is why the stickers look like objects rather than rectangles with rounded corners.

3. It gets proofed at print size

A design that reads beautifully at full screen can turn to mush at three inches. So every design is checked at the size it will actually be printed before it goes up for sale. Small details that disappear get simplified, outlines that would vanish get thickened.

4. It gets printed when you order it

Nothing is printed in advance. When you place an order, a print-on-demand partner prints your sticker on glossy vinyl, kiss-cuts it and sends it straight to you, usually within two to five working days before it ships. That is why there is no warehouse of faded old stock, and also why an order cannot be cancelled once it is in production: it is being made for you.

What the sticker actually is

  • Kiss-cut: the blade cuts through the vinyl but not the backing paper. The backing stays flat, and the design peels off in one piece.
  • Glossy, scratch-resistant vinyl: durable vinyl with a glossy finish that shrugs off the keys, coins and chargers a laptop bag throws at it.
  • Strong permanent adhesive: it is meant to stay where you put it, so plan before you peel (more on that below).
  • Indoor use, not waterproof: these are made for smooth, flat, dry surfaces indoors. Laptops, journals, Kindles, windows. Not water bottles, not car bumpers, not anything that goes through a wash cycle.

Putting it on properly

Most sticker disasters happen in the first thirty seconds. To avoid them:

  1. Clean the surface. Wipe it with a little rubbing alcohol or soapy water and let it dry completely. Skin oil and dust are what make edges lift later.
  2. Do it at room temperature. Adhesive is happier on a surface that is not freezing cold or hot from the sun.
  3. Plan before you peel. Hold the sticker in place with the backing still on and decide where it goes. You only get one clean first attempt.
  4. Start from one edge or the middle and press outward. Smooth it down with a thumb or the edge of a card to push out air bubbles as you go.
  5. Give it a day. Adhesive strengthens over the first day or so, so leave it alone and let it settle.

Keeping it looking new

  • To clean one, use a soft, clean, dry cloth and gently brush the dust off from the centre of the sticker outwards. Brushing from the centre means you never push grit under an edge.
  • Keep it dry. These stickers are not waterproof, so they are not dishwasher-safe either (neither are your feelings about that finale, and look how well you are holding up). Keep them off anything that gets washed or rained on.
  • If an edge starts to lift, it is almost always dirt underneath. Press it down firmly; if it will not stay, the surface needed a cleaner start.
  • Peeling one off later? Warm it briefly with a hairdryer and lift slowly from a corner. Leftover residue comes off with a little oil or rubbing alcohol.

Which size

The short answer: 3 inches suits most laptops. The long answer, with a credit card for scale, is in which sticker size should I get and on every sticker's product page.

If something arrives damaged or misprinted, send a photo within 30 days and it gets reprinted or refunded. No return needed. The returns page has the rest.
